Problems faced by students during their college life

Time spent in a college gives you amazing memories and a great experience. But, the students Life is not without a patch. Everyone is different, not every child can adapt the new environment that easily. Some of them face problems to adapt the new environment, but there can be some common problems faced by all the students in their college life. Some of them are listed below:

Time management:

College can be academically challenging for many students. For some students college courses require much more efforts than a high school classes did. Some students enjoy college life as well as manage to study well while others are just struggling with their studies.

Solution: While the purpose of the college is to learn something new and make use of it in future, that doesn’t mean you have to devote all your time in just studying. It is very important to schedule some time for fun activities and take breaks to keep your mind fresh.

Debt:

Education cost is rising at alarming rates. Adding to that the cost of housing, meals, supplies, transportation, and books including all this you have a recipe for unmanageable debt. Students are increasingly dropping out of the college and the main reason is expense. Some of them have to juggle full academic schedule with a full time or part time jobs to fulfill the needs. Everyone faces this problem, unless you are financially stable.

Solutions: student loans are relatively easy to get, but not everyone have the knowledge about how repayment works and how many years they may spend paying off their loans. This lack of knowledge only adds to stress. There are number of loans options available and you also get number of repayment options. Sit down with the financial advisor to get proper knowledge.

Consider an on- campus job, this will cut down your transportation cost and will also help you to stay focused on your academics. In addition create a budget for shopping, trips and eating our and stick to it firmly.

Spreading yourself too thin:

To afford a high price students take up a part time or full time jobs which results into missing out on extracurricular activities. They do not get time for relaxation. They do not get time exploring their college life. Many students try to cram these extracurricular activities in one day and do not take proper rest. It is very important for a child to take approximately 8 hours of sleep. Without proper rest, students get vulnerable to physical and mental health issues.

Solutions: Decide what is important? Prioritize your schedule including your studies and extra curricular activities. University often offers jobs that suits to students schedule. Make sure you don’t miss out such opportunities.

Homesickness:

Whether they admit or not but at a certain point they get homesick, especially those who leave alone in hostels or PG. Most probably this is your first year leaving without family. You must feel lonely sometimes.

Solution: If you live 3-4 hours drive away from your home, plan to visit your parents once or twice a month. Ask your family and friends to email, call or chat on daily basis (mainly to stay connected). You can socialize with new people, make new friends and stay connected to them, help them in need. This way you won’t be feeling homesick.

Depression:

Every problem in this list can increase a student’s stress level, and can contribute to emotional Lows. Some find temporary relief in partying but in long run it may contribute to depression.

Solution: if you are suffering through stress and depression, seek professional help. Many campus have free counseling sessions. Counselors are trains in such a way that they listen to students and get them back on track.

Sickness and health condition:

Stress, poor self care, lack of sleep and sometimes lack of sanitation may lead to serious health problems. Living in close quarters or at place where there is no proper sanitation may increase the chances of contracting illness.

Solution: Eat healthy food, maintain proper diet, get good amount of sleep, maintain proper sanitation. Even after that you are sick, don’t stretch just go and visit the doctor nearby.

Social problem:

If you’re lucky enough you’ll make new friends, establish connection and even spend time with your classmates or roommate. Most important thing is to build a community. However spending too much time together may lead to some conflicts and social relations may become distraction sometimes.

Solution: Take some time for yourself. If possible, visit a coffee shop or a mall, take a walk in neighborhood or just visit a local park. Prioritize your time in studying and taking care of yourself. If at all any conflicts arises take help from the other friends that are involved.

Partying:

Partying itself is not a problem, infect it helps students to blow off steam. However party can cause problems, students now a day’s gets involved into drugs and alcohol which may lead to risky behavior, health risks, and even potentially deadly situation. Sometimes students might go on a wrong track which may lead to some criminal offences.

Solution:  While parties are important, enjoy them with your friends in very responsible way so that you don’t create any problems for yourself or others. Stay in your limits. Ask a friend to drop you at your place if you are drunk.

Relationship:

Relationships are good, but sometimes they can be overwhelming. It may distract you from achieving your goals. There are some points when a couple has disagreements which may lead to stress.  Break-ups can drive students towards depression.

Solution: Relationship advice is hard to give, since each and every relationship is different in their own way. It is very important to establish a proper communication and set your goals so that you don’t miss out on anything.

Choosing a major:

It is very difficult to choose your major; students go under so much of pressure while deciding upon their career. It is very important to decide the career that fits you the best. It might be sometimes stressful.

Solution: college majors are important but make sure you choose something that you like. If you’re unsure about what majors to choose, take help from your parents, friends or relatives. But majorly focus on what you want. Worrying too much about it is simply not worth it.
